Teaching style

My teaching style blends structure with creativity, aiming to foster a classroom environment where students feel supported, curious, and empowered to take risks. I believe in hands-on, interactive learning that encourages students to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and express themselves confidently. I incorporate a mix of direct instruction, student-led inquiry, and project-based learning—often weaving in real-world connections and cross-curricular themes. Whether it's exploring science through cooking, discussing current events, or creating classroom podcasts, I love giving students authentic opportunities to learn and grow. Above all, I strive to make my classroom a place where every student feels seen, heard, and challenged in ways that inspire lifelong learning.

My own education history

My journey as an educator began as a student in the San Diego Unified School District. I attended Spreckels Elementary, Stanley Middle School, and graduated from University City High School, where I first discovered my passion for working with young learners. I went on to earn both my Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Sciences and my Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of California, Irvine, where I also obtained my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. My time at UC Irvine deepened my commitment to creating inclusive, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences for all students.

Additional biographical information

Hi, I’m Jake Nathenson—a dedicated educator, lifelong learner, and firm believer that learning should be both rigorous and fun. When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll likely find me around a board game table, cheering on my favorite sports teams, or coaching youth baseball. I played baseball through high school and have since managed and coached several teams of 13–14 year olds. Coaching has taught me just as much about leadership, patience, and teamwork as teaching has—and I love bringing that same spirit into my classroom and resources. Whether I’m designing a lesson, running a cooking club, or brainstorming ways to make content more interactive, I always aim to make learning engaging, meaningful, and full of joy.
