Measurement Lab (sig figs)
Very simple lab for early in the year with a few stations to get the idea of precise measurement and the usefulness of significant figures. Also helps students identify lab equipment and materials. If pH test strips are not available, I often use red cabbage leaves or juice, but you will have to make your own color-comparison chart, as I have never remembered to take a picture.

5-Paragraph Essay writing rubric
Just a generic rubric I use for any short (1-1 1/2 page) essay. Simply an attempt to practice the form of essay writing. Some prefer to put transitions in the next paragraph, but this is easy to grade on the fly with the rubric. Speeds grading these up considerably and limits subjectivity.

Quick Density Lab
Just a quick hands-on review of how to find density of an irregular solid using submersion. Materials required: graduated cylinder, irregular solid objects that will fit into your graduated cylinder (preferably greater density than water, or you will need to add instructions to push the object below the waterline), balance.

Short Test/Quiz over Tectonics, Cont Drift & Topo Maps
I used this as a re-test because I didn't like the test the district required. I tried to make it 70% low-level and 30% higher-level as much as possible with multiple choice format. Key follows on last page.

A little hands-on exercise demonstrating how temperature changes the properties of matter. Materials required: funnels, measuring spoons, timers and syrup (or any relatively viscous liquid). The analysis reviews graphing and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning.

Electric Car Conversion mini-project
Walks students through steps to convert a gasoline vehicle to a full electric vehicle. Requires research, conversions, use of speed, acceleration, force, work, power, energy, electrical power and electrical energy equations. Usually ends up with students realizing that accelerating like a Bugatti takes a great deal of engineering!

Teaching style
'Structured chaos' pushing students to leave their comfort zones and take challenges, even if they fail, so long as they learn from the experience. Hands-on, practical, relating to the students' worlds. Striving to move to paperless, inquiry based and project oriented as hard and fast as I can figure out how to integrate that into the current system of accountabililty.
