Lesson summary This lesson will begin with spy music playing and students wondering what you have in store for them. Students will then get into groups or work alone to decipher primary sources and form a story based upon what they see. By the end of class, students should have a written summary of what they believe happened. Each group will then read their summary while the teacher keeps track of correct points...winners receive a prize. The lesson can be followed up with an overview of Cornell

Lesson summary First, you will introduce some content about eight major Civil War battles. The information is just an overview so students get a feel for which battle they want to select for research. The next step is easing students into rapping...you’ll show a few parody clips to get some laughs and help students see that they don’t have to be a professional rapper to be successful. You’ll then allow students some time to practice rapping in a low pressure environment with topics of their choi

Lesson summary Prior to the lesson, print out the readings, and cover them up with construction paper. I generally tape them up around the room to get students up and moving. Students will then rotate in groups and read the text together. They will then write down a summary to the best of their knowledge without looking at the original source. This process will be repeated a few times, and students will learn how to reword texts on their own to avoid any type of plagiarism. The readings don’t re

Lesson summary This lesson will begin with a review of information on major early hominids, although it can also be used as an instructional. If you have any musical skills, you’ll begin by playing an acoustic live version of John Denver’s “I’m Sorry”, adapted to fit early humans. If you don’t, never fear! You can just play the original song or have a student perform the song I wrote. You will then model how students can outline their own thoughts in an organized manner. Students will write cond

Lesson summary This lesson centers around historical underdogs. Students will start off with a discussion about their family and friends. They will identify someone they know and care about who has overcome obstacles in their life. The teacher will then model what they would like students to complete during class. Students will have time to select an underdog they would like to study, they will take predetermined steps to research those people and will finish by using collaborative technology sk

Assessment Review in a Meaningful Way

This lesson is actually nine different ways that you can review with your students in a meaningful manner before an assessment. All options are available to adjust for students to review in smaller groups or on their own. All nine choices can be used in a short or long class session. Some require a few supplies, but nothing major, and some you can utilize on the spot with no preparation. One disclaimer I always provide students prior to reviewing, is that if they have their own style of review,

This document is just a resource you can print out, laminate and hang up. It is a brief presidential portrait of the first seven presidents, from establishing our country through Jacksonian democracy. I plan to finish all the presidents, but this is all I have at the time. The presidential portraits go nicely as part of a unit on the start up of our country through Jacksonian democracy.

Included are several review activities you can use for unit tests, smaller quizzes or any other type of assessment. The basic idea is to provide many different ways for students to review material you have covered so that they are having fun while they study. The activities also combine other skills and actions other than sitting and cramming for a test. Some students may elect that style and are better at studying on their, while these activities are provided for the large group of students who

Lesson summary This document is a series of awards you can sign, laminate (if you want to) and hang up on lockers. You can also hand them out in class, although I generally hang them up so students have a fun surprise when they get to school in the morning. Rationale for the lesson This document is not, in fact, a lesson, but recognition for student accomplishments. I generally pick certain projects or lessons throughout the year to make the signs and then hang them on student lockers. Sometime

Lesson summary This lesson is a fun way to start your school year. You’ll first discuss what a time capsule is. You will then show students your own (if you prefer to model it) and then pass out the time capsule sheet. You’ll allow students a bit of time to work and plan and then collect the time capsules a few days later. Find a spot in the school to hide them and then wait until the year is over. That’s it! Students will love getting their time capsule back at the end of the year...they forget

There are many reasons to follow the rules. It is helpful to the educational environment when students do follow rules, regardless of their reasons. However, included is a list of reasons from weakest (#6) to strongest (#1). The reasons the weak reasons are such is that it won’t take much to convince this type of person to break the rules. Students will put the list in order and discuss, while the teacher will observe and then reveal the most long lasting reasons to follow the rules.

This lesson covers a guided scavenger hunt that teachers can use virtually as students will search for items in their houses. They may or may not utilize their family members or backyards, so you can adjust as you see fit to your population of students. During virtual learning, teachers can struggle to connect with students in the same manner they did during face to face instruction. Even more striking, many students lose the social interaction of spending time with classmates during traditional

Experience

I have a decade of experience from 5th-12th grades teaching early human development/prehistory, Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, ancient India, ancient China, Medieval Europe, MesoAmerica, world cultures/current events, Civics, Political Science, Law, Sociology, Geography, News Writing, Creative Writing and Reading Strategies

Teaching style

Much like you, my style is varied because so are the students I teach. I do my best to take various approaches to inspire students to seek out knowledge in my subject area. Some of the many activities I share are: simulations, debates, skits, author background checks, incorporating music, connecting history to current events, taking meaningful notes, building argumentation skills, interactive class openers, constructive closure activities, mock trial, Model UN and many more.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My biggest reward is looking back through yearbooks, pictures, emails and other correspondence from students about a difference I have made in their lives. I don't get those types of items from everyone, but those who have taken time to reach out help inspire me to continue teaching. It is what I believe I was put on earth to do, and I hope to bring creative and meaningful lessons to others as well.

My own education history

I have a Bachelor's Degree in History and am currently pursuing a Master's in History. I student taught American History, Civics and a Gifted and Talented class. Since then I have taught World History, US History, World Cultures/Current Events, Creative Writing, News Writing, Law and Historical Espionage.
