Start the lesson with the Bell Work included in the presentation. You can give the slides to the students as reference and/or go over the lesson with them. Students will need you to show an example of how to create citations in Citation Machine. Whether you provided them with the topic or if they have to choose their own topic, give them time to look for at least three websites. Give them time to read the information found in the websites and complete the “Research Notes” handout (last slide of
First, present the type of essay or research assignment the students will be working on. Create a menu of topics for students to choose from or decide if you will give them free choice. Make sure to approve topics before the next step, "Research Notes." Use the "How to Choose the Topic" handout (first slide) to present the skill. This ice-breaker has 2 parts. After distributing a copy of the handout to each student, give the first part of the instructions. 1. Each student will “schedule” a meeting with 12 classmates. They will write the name of the classmate they have the meeting with next to their agreed upon meeting time. For example, if Josh and Linda agree to have a meeting at 3:00, Linda writes Josh’s name next to the #3 in the clock and vice versa. (Give students 6-8 minutes to go around the room and schedule meet
Print the following document or have the students follow it as a guide for drafting. Oftentimes we don't know where to start writing. Moving from the previous writing step, the "Outline" is a good place to start.
Go over the objective with the students. You will find the objective at the top of the instructions handout. Read over the instructions and explain them giving an example of how you would fill out the document. The students will need time to work on the handout. I suggest giving them time in class as well as time at home to complete the document. Go around the room checking their progress and helping the students.
