As a young mother, I taught my three children at home for 11 years before going back to school and earning my credentials to teach. I have been teaching in public schools for over 4 years, and my specialty is eighth grade mathematics. Prior to homeschooling, my career was engineering, which I often draw upon to illustrate lessons in the math classroom.

Pumpkin Math Day
Students measure the circumference, diameter and weight of several pumpkins. The pumpkins are already cut in half and the seeds have been scooped out of the pumpkins. Each pumpkin has a number, and each bag of seeds is numbered the same as its corresponding pumpkin. Students need to have tape measures, yard sticks, and a set of scales for measuring the pumpkins. Students will record the data as found.

Teaching style
My teaching style revolves around the interests and needs of my students. I use various types of projects to demonstrate the uses and process of mathematics in the classroom. As a teacher of eighth graders, I try to include the subject of food in many of my projects, since these young teens can always relate to food, the one subject that is ever on their minds. In summary, I mostly use a project-based style of teaching.
