The book, Escaping the Giant Wave, is filled with figurative language. This activity is great to have students find and identify the figurative language within the text, determine the figurative and literal meanings, and determine what it helps the reader to understand. This can be used while reading the text, or as a project to be completed after reading the book.

If you are teaching a unit on natural disasters, this is a great activity to introduce some of the natural disasters by having students do a little research of their own. In this activity, they define, sketch, and determine key characteristics for eight natural disasters.
