Self-evaluations for Primary students

Student self-evaluation is an important skill to help students become independent learners. I have created this rubric to use with my students to help them evaluate their effort towards their own work. There is a section for the student to evaluate themselves and then a section for the teacher which can lead to discussion between teacher and student. The language is simple and generally evaluates their effort, ability to stay on task and work neatly. Please don't forget to leave feedback for m

This activity is used as a monthly work sample for young children. The students give a name writing sample and then draw a picture of themselves for each month of the school year. You can use all the samples to create a work portfolio for each student. Check more ideas on my blog at: http://owlsandowlsoffun.blogspot.com Mrsmeyer822

These are the basic format for asking and answering questions using low level non-fiction text. I used these by cutting the pages apart, gluing them to fun color paper & laminating the cards to stimulate discussion and teach my students how to hold a "book talk." The common core standards require students to work with non fiction text more than ever. This is a great way for students to lead the discussions. mrsmeyer822 Check out more ideas on our blog at: http://owlsandowlsoffun.blogspot.com

I use this as a warm up to get us into math. We use today's date as the number and the students need to finish the rest. The activity addresses number identification, place value, sequencing, number words, addition, subtraction and mental math. I have also considered using it as center work. See my SMART number of the day activity that goes with it. (Mrsmeyer822)

UPDATED: 1/2/15 - new images, story elements & CCSS noted on the posters. Check out my store for book marks to use with your students for independent reading. I attached mine to craft sticks to help keep them on task when I ask them to read for a specific purpose. I use these posters in my classroom for introducing the WH questions and leave them posted in my reading corner for students to think about while they read. They are there to refer to as we work in guided reading groups as well. Thes

Self-Evaluations for Intermediate students

A quick and easy tool for upper elementary/ intermediate age students to reflect on their effort during independent assignments. The students are asked to honestly evaluate their own effort and completion of assignments. The teacher then has the opportunity to discuss the results with the student. When used frequently, students learn to be honest with themselves and improve the quality of their work through improved effort and accountability.

This is 3 different bookmarks I made for my students to use with the books they selected to take home from the classroom or the library. I simply check the level of the text & put the appropriate bookmark in the book. The headings on each let parents know what they should expect from their child in terms of reading the book and discussion questions to help their child discuss what they have read. mrsmeyer822

These book marks correlate with the WH posters available for free in my store. I use these to send with the students during independent reading time to help keep them on task. The students have the visual reminder of what they should be reading for that day. They can also be used for individual students as needed to focus their thinking. There are bookmarks for Who, Where, What & When. Check out the posters in my store. MrsMeyer822

I use this homework for my primary (k-2) special education classroom as nightly homework. At the end of each school day, the students must write one or two sentences about what they did or learned during the day. This gives parents a talking point for when they get home instead of the kids saying they did "nothing" at school. They then need to write back to us about what they read that evening. The homework is differentiated for each grade level. Check out more ideas at my blog at: http://owls

This is a fun Valentine's activity that is connected to the NYS Math Module 1 for the Common Core for 1st grade. The students have 12 facts to solve and then have them color the addition hearts pink and the subtraction hearts red. I then had them cut them out and find the related facts. Easy and fun for a Valentine's Math activity. Check out more Common Core lessons in my store Mrsmeyer822

I used these recipe cards for my students to create our class Thanksgiving dinner recipe book. We used this to introduce writing informational text and using transition words; first, next, then, last, etc.. There are recipe cards for turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, green beans, squash, dinner rolls and pumpkin pie. It is a WORD document so you can easily change it to fit your needs. Check out my blog to see more ideas! http://owlsandowlsoffun.blogspot.com Mrsmeyer82

Teaching style

It is impossible to identify one teaching style when you work with students as unique as a fingerprint. Special education students may come with an "identifier" but it is not who they are. I teach students. I love meeting students where they are and working together to help them grow.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Osceola County first year teacher of the year (2001)

My own education history

National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist - 2009, 2018

Additional biographical information

I LOVE spending time with my children. Watching them grow and develop is so exciting. They have enhanced my desire to do best by my students, helping them to be successful despite their academic, social and personal struggles.
