Who is Ms. Duffy? What is her dream?
Hi, I am a public school teacher in New York. I love teaching and have taught second grade, Kindergarten, Pre-K, and am currently teaching third grade. I love creating worksheets and crafts and activities for my students.
I chose Ms. Duffy’s Dream to honor my mother.
My mother was born in Ireland in 1939. At the age of 15 she needed to leave home for work. She left Ireland after her eighth year of school. Despite not having any formal education beyond eighth grade, my mother is a very smart woman. She worked in England and sent money home to her family. My mother always dreamed of coming to America so she did not stay long in England. By the time she was 17, my mom, then Ms. Duffy, had made her first of many dreams come true arriving in America. Although America was exciting it was also challenging being on her own at such a young age. As soon as she could, my mother got her G.E.D and her citizenship. She worked and continued to send money home. Fast forward many years and…she is married and raising six children. Wow! (I can barley handle my two) Throughout my childhood, my mother always supported our education and constantly told us to value the opportunities that education could give us. Her encouragement to always do our best and to always dream of more for ourselves and that message I know has shaped my beliefs. I believe that education can change a life. I believe that every day when I am in my classroom, giving my best to my students, I am honoring what she taught me. She taught me that I should dream big, I should always do my best and that an education can change a life and allow you to do whatever you want to do in life. I owe everything to that young girl, Ms. Duffy, for having the courage to follow a dream.
