Rather than a textbook, I use this packet in class when teaching essays. It contains: 2 methods to format MLA style (using MS Word templates AND click-by-click instructions for MS Word)How to make a works cited page using the Mybib citation machine, also describes how to manually create hanging indentions OWL MLA quick-reference checklist handout for checking MLA format and citationCreating parenthetical, in-text citations Integrating quotes and evidence into textMLA first page sampleMLA works
Students hate peer review because it intimidates them. They don't have a degree in English & have no idea what to look for. This checklist for MLA style research essays streamlines the peer review process. It can also be used as a writer's personal checklist (without a peer).
This lesson has students address a hypothetical essay prompt and plan the key aspects of an essay without writing the entire essay. It serves to help them understand the organizational structure and parts/purposes of the essay.
35 question, multiple choice, MS Word Doc. Covers: Identification of subjects & verbs, identification of run-on sentences (fused, spliced, rambling) and fragments.
Students often understand outlining but have trouble with the format and hierarchy. This worksheet helps them to know where to place the major parts of the essay as well as how to integrate evidence effectively.
Learning sentence structures, subjects, and verbs is easier for visual & kinesthetic learners if it involves movement & color like this activity does. Highlighters, markers or color pencils are needed.
This assignment has two parts: written & arts integration/presentation. You can have students do both parts or have students choose, embedding options & remediation. Part 1: Students write an analysis of symbols in Zora Neale Hurston's "Sweat" Part 2: Students create their own symbol to add to the story & present their product. There is a rubric as well.
Introducing poetry analysis is easier & more engaging if you do it with their favorite songs! This lesson provides 2 options for differentiation: a written assignment or a presentation, or you can have students do both as a 2-part assignment. A rubric for grading is included.
Symbolism is the hardest figurative language concept to grasp because students get it mixed up with metaphor or motif. This fun, hands-on, engaging activity helps clear the confusion on what symbolism really is in a concrete way by having students self-assess their personalities & "symbolize" themselves using Play-Doh. There are no "right" answers, just a fun, intuitive approach to a complicated concept in order to experience & understand it better. Great for students on the spectrum, too!
This AP Lit thesis template is easy to teach, easy to use, and color-coded for visual learners. It puts together both elements of a quality literary analysis thesis: theme and how the author used devices/techniques to portray and further the theme. It includes a handy chart of rhetorical verbs for options. It is labeled AP but can be used for any literary analysis writing assignment.

Pre-writing doesn't have to be forced. Use this bubble map as a fun organizer to get students' ideas down & get them organized into body paragraph ideas!
The hard part about outlining for students is not the organizational concept. It is the A, B, Cs and 1, 2, 3s of it all. That part seems technical & intimidates them, so using this worksheet as "training wheels" is very effective. I've used it for almost 20 years now!
This assignment gives writing prompts using argumentative, narrative, or expository modes & has students compose effective thesis statements for each prompt.
