I have been teaching middle school science for 31 years. I taught 6th grade science for 2 years and 7th grade science for 6 years and am currently teaching 8th grade science. I have 23 years of experience teaching 8th grade science. Preparing my students for the STAAR test requires teaching very abstract concepts. Giving students hands on experiences is the best way to prepare them for the constructive response questions on the test. Teaching science is my passion and I enjoy the hands on activities and relating it to real world.

Don't Be A Drag Friction Lab
Students will be using a spring scale to acquire the force as they drag their shoe on different services, including the table top, tile floor, carpet, plastic, cloth, foil, parchment paper, cardboard. They will mass their shoe and use the force and mass to calculate acceleration.

Branches of science graphic organizer
Students define the branches of science vocabulary terms in their journals using my graphic organizer. They then are ask to make a computer generated graphic organizer or a poster graphic organizer showing the branches of science with pictorial representation for each scientific term.

Outdoor Explores Activity
In this activity I introduce Biodiversity to my students by going outside and having the students find different living organisms in the plant, fungi and animal species and with their paper on a clip board or their journal they sketch and label their drawing. We come back in and discuss that even in such a small area as the school yard the biodiversity we found.

My life as a water drop cartoon activity
Students use blooms level of synthesis to create a cartoon using the steps of the water cycle. Each cartoon will be a little different because each drop of water will travel a different path. These turn out very cute and students can use the element of personification to bring their drop of water alive.

Students will create a poster exhibiting 3 of the lab safety rules and 3 of the science safety symbols and present it to the class. Students will grade the students poster using a rubric which they will see before hand as they create the product.

Students complete warm-ups the first few minutes of class and we discuss as a class. Here is two I created on abiotic and biotic factors. Using a metric ruler students will draw and label their foot in centimeters. During the lesson students are introduced to the three types of investigations which include descriptive, comparative, and experimental. The class will focus on comparative investigations today and look at the similarities and differences in the measurements. Students will graph the overall data collected.
