Fractions & Decimals Math Font

This is a font I made to use for teaching fractions and decimals, because I needed fractional shapes that maintained their size/proportion with one another, even when denominations changed. Also, I work with students with learning disabilities, and often commercially produced workbooks have too many visual distractions on a page, or the fonts/pictures are so small that my students with poor eye-hand coordination inevitably make errors. Developing it as a font made it possible to keep these sh

Desk strips for students' desks with ABCs in print & cursive, #s 0-26. Give students the alphabet within their immediate sight. I recommend printing the version you prefer, cutting, and laminating for durability.

Sorting Quadrilaterals by Attribute

This is a lesson I do with students to help them understand how we can sort quadrilaterals by their attributes/features/characteristics. Learning the reasoning behind the sorting rules helps them to grapple with statements such as "All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares". Then, as you advance through the slides, the quadrilaterals are progressively defined by more and more attributes. The colour-coding of the characteristics helps students to fill in information that

Conflict resolution tool. Can be made with paint sticks, thin rope, and a permanent marker (unit will resemble a ladder when finished), or steps can be printed on paper, laminated, and folded accordion-style. Great way to help children resolve conflicts independently (once they've learned the steps and practiced them with an adult over-seeing their progress). I also print pocket-sized versions on card stock and provide them to recess monitors to use when arguments arise between kids on the playg

This is a PDF I made based on exercises my students do to understand the difference between like & equivalent fractions. It is almost purely visual in nature, though there are spaces occasionally for fractions to be named (I don't usually have students write in the numerator/denominator for the equivalent fractions until they're comfortable with the visual aspect of the exercise first). I made this in Notebook originally, so I'm able to drag shapes on top of each other to show equivalency. This

Adding Fractions Visually

This is a Notebook file that follows one of the JUMP sequences of steps for adding fractions. The resulting fraction makes an improper fraction (11/10), and each slide is accompanied by visuals. It just needs to be launched in full screen, and advanced through slide-by-slide. The steps build on themselves.

Experience

I have been teaching since 2001, and spent 9 years as a lead classroom teacher in grades 1, 2, and 3. I've been a Resource Teacher/Learning Specialist since 2011, working with students with learning disabilities, and supporting K-8 classroom teachers.

Teaching style

My teaching style is variable and changes with students' needs, the types of materials I'm presenting, and whether I'm guiding a whole-class lesson, teaching in small groups, or working one-on-one with students. To that end, I use explicit, direct instruction when needed, and inquiry-based, constructivist approaches when our studies are more open-ended in nature, though typically any given lesson of mine will reflect a blend of these traditional and progressive education models. I work hard to create a learning environment that is developmentally appropriate for all of my students.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Howard Gardner, the most humble, kind and intelligent person you could ever wish to have championing the idea of all kinds of intelligences, observed me teach--twice! I will always treasure that.
