About the store

Currently, I am a Resource Specialist at the high school level. I work with students with ASD, ADHD, Specific Learning Disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and other cognitive disabilities. I work closely with my general education peers as I push in to co-teach English and Geometry, and my students work with me at least one period a day. I am a part of the Equity Team at my school where I get to educate my peers on the inequities in special education, what we can do to work against those inequities, and learn more about how to be an anti-racist and coconspirator to protect other marginalized groups. Before my current position, I worked at an Early Intervention program with toddlers with disabilities. In college, I was a Direct Support Professional for adults and seniors with disabilities. to date, I have worked with individuals who are just shy of one to seventy years old. In high school, my passion of working with children with disabilities came very organically. I decided to volunteer at my church with children with disabilities and soon found myself to be the leader of the program. I then became a Teacher's Assistant in a Moderate Special Day Class and volunteered at many Special Olympics which brought me so much joy. I became a leader at another church in their mid-week Special Education Ministry. I soon knew what my true calling was as working with individuals with disabilities always brought me the most joy.

This is a great form where students can report if they have their necessities (have eaten), what they need help on academically, and how they are caring for their mental health. They also report on their current mood, and upcoming tests on this weekly Mood Monday activity. With my students, we call this "Mood Monday" and I use this tool every Monday at the beginning of class to help personalize and steer the class based on their needs. Teaching style

I like to think of my teaching style as firm, but comfortable. My students know that I am the person on campus they can feel safe to come to if they feel unsafe, they need help or advice. My class is very structured, we do the same check in activity for mental health on Mondays, and have assignments related to their goals every other class period, with time to work on their general education coursework with my and our classroom paraeducator's assistance. One day a week while we have been remote, I have scheduled out time for students to go outside, get away from screens and focus on their mental health. Although my class has structure, I am still flexible to the needs of my students and how they need to be supported. Fostering a warm, positive, comfortable and safe environment is the most important to me.

My own education history

I grew up in Danville California and graduated from San Ramon Valley High School. I went straight to Sonoma State University and majored in Business Management. Though I enjoyed business, it was more of my family's passion for me, and my passion was special education. My sophomore year, my mother was unhappy while working at one of the most wealthy companies in the country, called me, and told me to do what makes me happy... from that point on, I had my eyes set on pursing my Education Specialist credential after graduating. I was accepted to San Jose State University's Mild/Moderate Education Specialist credential program, and asked to pursue my Masters in Education as well. Today, I am a second year Resource Specialist working in my quaint hometown at my ~rival~ high school.
