I have 10 years of teaching experience in 5th and 6th grade. I have my masters in reading from UVA and love to integrate literacy across content areas. I've had the opportunity to work with a variety of learners, including students with ADHD, ADD, students with learning disabilities, deaf and HOH students, blind students, students with emotional disorders, ESOL students, and gifted students. Solid, Liquid, Gas Experiment Using Oobleck(Aligned with VA SOL 5.4a, 5.4b) In this experiment, students work with oobleck (or a “mystery substance”) and have to determine if it’s a solid, liquid or gas based on experiments they design. All you have to do is supply the oobleck ingredients (2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water). Paperclips and Water: An Experiment to Teach Constants
This experiment teaches students about the importance of constants. They fill a glass with water and then hypothesize about how many paper clips it will take to overflow the glass. The results end up being much higher than they expect due to surface tension.
After completing the experiment, you can hold a class discussion about why it was important to keep parts of the experiment the same, or constant.
