This slideshow is a complete pre-reading guide for How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It includes a meet the author section and vocabulary work using context clues. There are student worksheets embedded right into the slides as well! These slides took my 6th grade level 3 EL students three 47 minute blocks to complete.
This end of the year activity is a big hit with my classes! The memory book is filled with themed pages, prompts, and spaces for students to gather notes and signatures. We typically spend about 3-4 class periods working on these books. Some of the pages included are: -classroom highlights -all about me right now -teachers' spotlight -school mascot This was also designed to be open ended, so it works for all middle school grades. In this assignment students are asked to make their own flag and then explain their reasoning behind what they create. It has a brainstorming activity built into it help the stduents get their ideas out onto paper before creating their final flag. I use it as a begnign of the year activity as one way of getting to know my students. However, you could use this at any time really. This activity was designed for a newcomers' social studies class. The students in this class are learning English but all have a home language that is either Spanish or Portuguese. In the activity students will be reading about different gods and goddesses from ancient Egypt and then creating a poster about one to share with the class. This is valentine's day themed and can easily be used again and again. For my 6th grade level 3 ELL students I know this activity takes 1-2 classes to complete, 45-90 minutes. This acticity was used in an ELL (English Language Learner's) level 1 geography class. It was used to recape physical features and get students to start exploring which types of physical features that can be found in Latin America.
This resource is a student facing worksheet that helps students work through a Khan Academy video about determining theme. I used it as a whole class assignemnt but it would also work as an independent or asyncronous assignment. The studnets I used this with were 6th grade, level 3 English Language Learners, so it is ELL friendly.
