I love using picture books with my students during writing workshop. When we do innovations, students take a familiar text and rewrite it with a twist. This cute little poem freebie was pulled from my Penguin Unit for Big Kids. Pattern poems are great, even for reluctant writers because of their structure. As a bonus, the finished products look great on seasonal bulletin board displays. I have my students do a draft on regular paper and we check it together before transferring it to their final copy. I made these free item as a bonus for my Johnny Appleseed Apple Unit for Big Kids packet, but I wanted to pull it out as a free item for everyone. I have my students write a note inside to Johnny with ideas how he might want to spend his birthday, based on what we learned about him in class.
