Energy in the Atmosphere: Conduction, Convection, Radiation

Created by

Unit on the Earth's atmosphere focusing on Conduction, Convection and Radiation. Students define the terms in a foyer box (examples and pictures). The next part is a description of the way those 3 types of energy heat the earth's atmosphere. The independent practice is to sort out 10 different "activities" to decide whether they are are conduction, convection, or radiation. There is a multiple choice exit slip - great for data. Answer key provided at the end.

Practice: Herbivore, Omnivore, Carnivore, Decomposer Label

Students practice labeling different animals using their newly learned vocabulary (must understand producer and consumer definitions). They write in the box whether each animal would be labeled as an herbivore, omnivore, carnivore or decomposer. Great activity for independent or guided practice in a Unit that discusses organism feeding types.

Scientific Method: Which HAND is dominant?

This is a great activity to break down the steps of the scientific method. Students start out by making observations about their hands and then form a hypothesis to "test" which one is dominant by having them see how many boxes they can check in a thirty second time period. They record their data and graph it in order to justify that their left or right hand is dominant (since it should be the hand that checks more boxes). A very easy way to demonstrate the steps of the scientific method as well

How Many Drops of Water Fit on a Penny?

This is a lab that can either be a good way to investigate surface area and/or the scientific method. The student goes through the scientific method to find out how many drops of water can fit on a penny. Theres a graphing exercise on the back. This was designed for a middle/hs special education science class - could work well for elementary students too. Theres an optional HW assignment on the back of the hand out.

Color by Algebra is here! Used numerous times in my classroom and has always been a huge hit. First page is answering questions about polynomials (finding the degree, adding and subtracting). Once you get the answer, it tells you where to color! Answer key included. Great for reinforcement or for a substitute. Could be done in a group or alone.

Color by Algebra is here! A huge hit in all my classrooms grades 7-10th. Find the greatest common factor (GCF) in each box and match the answer on the fish drawing. Color it in according to the color box it was found in. Great for reinforcement, sub days and extra credit.
