Are you tired of teaching each data display in isolation? Use this card sort to help your students see the connections between the four representations of data: box plots, histograms, stem and leaf plots and dot plots. There are 15 sets of cards to match with 3 different displays of the same data in each match. Students will attend to the range, spread, median, mode and variability to tell which displays represent the same data sets. Questions to prompt student thinking and discussion question
Task Cards for 6th Grade Linear Equations including y=mx and y=x+b. Each task card includes a table, graph, equation, fill in the blank description of the situation, and a box to identify the independent and dependent variables. Equations include additive and multiplicative situations and include a mixture of fractions, decimals and whole numbers. All situations are carnival themed. This is perfect for an end of unit review of linear equations in 6th grade math. Full Answer Key Included. Al
This project assesses students ability to draw rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids of given areas on a scaled grid. They will need to be able to use the area formulas to work backwards to find side lengths that fit the requirement for each animal and use the formulas to show that their area calculation is correct. A detailed MYP Criterion D (Applying Mathematics in the Real World) Rubric is included. I spent about 2 and a half 90 minute class periods on this project and many
This is an investigation activity that students can do independently or in groups to discover the patterns when converting fractions to repeating decimals. It provides examples of how to use long division to convert a fraction to a decimal and then has students apply the same strategy to other fractions with the same denominator. These examples make it great for a sub plan or for early finishers with no instruction needed from the teacher. Students will investigate the patterns in the decimals
This product includes 4 contexts with a space to use the given information to fill in the table, graph, equation, and fill in the blank description. It is an editable google doc so you can add or remove questions as you see fit, but you can not edit the tables, graphs, etc. Check out my similar products here: Writing Equations from Tables and GraphsAlgebraic Representations Task Cards - Carnival ThemedAlgebraic Representations Bundle
This is a fun non curricular thinking task that goes beyond just asking students to convert rational numbers to other forms and put them in order. It provides students with an opportunity to think more deeply about the relative sizes of rational and irrational numbers and strategically choose which shapes to place where. There are many valid approaches and answers to this task so it is a great way to start the year and build a thinking classroom. This includes both a version made for 5th, 6th,
These number line problems range from extremely accessible to very challenging for even my highest students. They gradually take students through different rational number concepts and strategies while working on a number line. This really helped my 6th graders better understand the magnitude of fractions, mixed numbers and decimals and how to place numbers on the positive and negative side of the number line. It promoted great discussions in the student groups. It includes 4 pages of student w
Scientific Notation Problems start VERY accessible and get gradually more challenging. Each question has students write the expanded form and the standard form and some ask for the scientific form given the standard or expanded form. Great for group work with building thinking classrooms or independent practice after a lesson.
Do you have students still using their fingers or counting up by ones for two-digit addition problems? This worksheet/activity is perfect for students who need to develop strategies for two-digit addition beyond counting by ones using ten frames, bar models, and number lines. It is intentionally designed to help students see how the repeated reasoning of making 10's can be helpful for mental addition. It would be a great investigation to follow up on a series of addition number talks because th
Includes 4 card matching activities, saving $4.25 when purchased as a bundle. Data Displays - matching box plots, histograms, stem and leaf plots and dot plots that represent the same data. Includes teacher questions and discussion slides Area Formulas - matching shapes with the correct area formula with the side lengths substituted in and the answers. Includes extension & independent practice. Properties of Operations - matching expressions using commutative, associative and distributive pro
Each student chooses a different pair of numbers (one fraction, one whole or mixed), make up a corresponding word problem for multiplication and one for division using their two numbers, answers the question using a representation, and checks their answer using keep-change-flip. An MYP Communication rubric (out of 8) and a 100 point rubric are both included so you can choose. Lots of Differentiation with - Choice of problems ranging from easier to very challenging - Reference sheets to suppor
After using several visual patterns as warm ups building up to writing equations, I created this to push my students to figure out how to determine the slope and y intercept of an equation from a table that skips x values and doesn't include 0. This worked great with Building Thinking Classroom practices, especially with students who are familiar with writing equations from visual patterns. I've personally used it with advanced 6th graders and 7th graders. A detailed answer key and questions
These random grouping cards contain 120 sets of matching cards to use for random grouping. Each set has 3 cards that are equivalent for students to find their random group for the day. This is a total of 360 cards for you to choose from or change throughout the year. You can choose topics ranging from multiplication facts, equivalent fractions, decimals and percents, all the way to equivalent expressions with exponents and variables. The cards are meant to be simple enough for students to quick
This product includes 3 different Halloween-themed non-curricular tasks for you to choose from. Have fun with a challenging task or riddle with your students while they get a chance to practice collaboration with lower-stakes tasks. The tasks have to do with Halloween creatures, haunted houses, and trick-or-treating plans. The math concepts are accessible to most grades but ideal for 3rd through 8th grade. One of the 3 tasks is more mathematically appropriate for 6th-8th grade only. The files
A page of exponents practice and a page of prime factorization practice, each with a completed example at the top. This would be a great activity for a sub day or for students with learning needs who benefit from completed examples. It is a completely editable google doc so you can delete the completed example too if you want. Answer Key Included!
Each student chooses a different pair of numbers (they range from 8 & 4 to 80 & 4 so students can choose an appropriate challenge), make up a corresponding word problem for multiplication and one for division using their two numbers, answers the question using a representation and explain how they did it. A rubric (out of 4) is included. Lots of Differentiation with - Choice of problems ranging from easier to very challenging - Reference sheets to support students in the more challenging aspe
Do your students need concrete or real-world examples before learning abstract concepts like slope? This introductory lesson to slope on a coordinate grid is perfect for you! It begins with a story about the steepness of cat stairs and ramps.
Card sort matching fraction multiplication problems to various visual representations and verbal descriptions. The recording sheet and follow up reflection questions ask students to sort the problems into expressions where the product is less than both factors, less than one and greater than the other, and greater than both factors and generalize when each happens. Check out my other card sorts focused on connecting visual representations and algebraic/numeric expressions. Properties of Operati
Do your students need practice determining equivalent expressions with exponents, the commutative property, the distributive property, and more with just numbers and with variables? This activity is great for independent practice or group work! There is one page with just numbers and one page with variables. In each row, there are 3 equivalent expressions and one that is not equivalent. Find the odd one out. Answer Key included. Perfect for a substitute day! Includes exponents but no negatives.
