Protractor Angles! (An introduction to measureing angles with a protractor)

Grades 5-8, here's a Lab activity using protractors! Every get frustrated with the angles being too small? Not here! They fit the protractor perfectly! In addition, the "correct" way to measure angles is emphasized. (Evidentially, the "correct" way is to measure counterclockwise.) I copied the Labsheet on colored paper and reused them in each of my four classes. This could be done individually, in a small group, or with partners. Happy angling! Answer key coming soon...

This is a continuation of Open Box A, with volumes that a little bit larger. Meets Common Core State Standard: 5.MD.5: Relate volume to the operation of multiplication. This hands on activity requires students to cut out, fold, and then find how many centimeter cubes will fill the box. Students then record the dimensions of the box and relate to the volume through multiplication. (length x width) x height = volume

*Cut this sheet in half, students glue in notebook. 1. Choose 12 or more circular objects (My favorites are an old record, cd, and bicycle wheel). 2. Students measure each with string or flexible measuring tape. 3. They calculate the ratio and the average. Voila! that should be close to pi. 4. In the last column, have them check their work by multiplying the diameters by 3.14! 5. You could also show the video about circles: http://www.shmoop.com/video/circles
