I have been teaching science for 11 years and have been a STEM Coordinator for 9 component school districts. I am a NYS Master Teacher and serve as the intermediate level Director at Large for STANYS (Science Teacher's Association of NY State).
Climate is what you EXPECT, Weather is what you GET! Using M & Ms, students will gather data about weather and hypothesize about the climate of the area. This includes a VIRTUAL OPTION for students who are remote learners or students without access to M & M candies!
Students will get comfortable with latitude and longitude coordinates by playing the classic game: BATTLESHIP! This digital resource will allow students to play against each other virtually or in person, while still having fun and learning about coordinate systems!
This is a virtual interactive activity designed to show students first-hand the differences between renewable and nonrenewable resources. In this activity, students will be able to interact with each other in a friendly competition for resources, students will gather and analyze data, students will graph, and students will answer conclusion questions. This whole activity is designed using Google Slides and does not require any other resources or require students to share any physical materials!
Imagine you are a piece of earth material. This board game will take you through the rock cycle to see all things you could possibly turn in to! While playing the game, students will also be analyzing data and looking at the steps of the rock cycle.
The snack that smiles back--if it survives! This lab will pit goldfish and pretzel fish against each other in an exciting evolutionary race to see what fish species is fittest! You hungry sharks--I mean students--will love seeing natural selection in action!
Students will create a scale model of the solar system using nothing but Google Slides! they will do easy conversions, research facts about each planet, and insert pictures. There is also an extension added which has students add other celestial objects like the asteroid belt, dwarf planets, the International Space Station, and even Voyager II! Once complete, students can "fly" through space in "Present" mode to really get the effect of how BIG our solar system is!
A digital resource that allows students to practice color-coding and reading topographic maps. After students have color-coded the maps in the easy-to-use slides, they will analyze each map and answer questions about the features in the maps!
A hands on activity for kids to explore what materials create higher static friction, friction on a flat surface, and friction on an inclined plane. This includes teacher instructions and links to materials if you don't already have them.
Students use problem solving skills and the scientific method to solve the pressing issue of a stained lucky shirt! Though observations, predictions, transformation into a washing machine and back to a students, and then data analysis, students will solve a real-life problem and be able to apply those results to their lives and personal situations!
This series of interactive mini-lessons will work through the difference between rotation and revolution with examples and evidence of each. It will also begin to analyze why there are seasons on planet Earth!
This review (or introduction) of Simple Machines will keep kids engaged and curious! Students will read (or watch--some of the clues are video clips!) the clues and select what kind of simple machine matches. The answers are color-coded to match a secret picture. Students will get to choose a theme that appeals to them to color in, increasing engagement. This can be done full on a device with no need to print and no frustrating programs to figure out how to color in--it's all contained in Google
Students will get practice finding specific coordinates on a map, using longitude and latitude, and identifying the equator and prime meridian. This is a great follow-up activity to Latitude/Longitude Battleship!
Students will zip to places around the world and take a peek at their weather--and all the things that contribute to the "WEATHER" of a location!
