Mathematics Scope and Sequence For Year Zero To Three

Created by
Number Agents
This scope and sequence is based on teaching number. I am based in NZ so it is linked to the NZ curriculum, however can be used with any curriculum. This was something I created in 2021 and have used again in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. I have just done a big update and this is up to date as of January 2026. It includes everything you will need to get started. There is an assessment folder with assessment tasks that can be used and documents you can use for tracking. I created this resource aft

Catch Up Sessions For Year 2 and 3

This product is to be used in conjunction with the Scope and Sequence. I wrote it as a refresh, to ensure my year 1 and 2 children (who had already been working through the scope and sequence) had the knowledge they needed to move on. This document is intended to catch up or refresh sessions 1-28 in a set of seven sessions. Perfect if you are starting this scope and sequence with an older class and want to make sure they have the foundational understandings of the patterns necessary to move f

Portal Maths - An abridged approach to go along with the Scope and Sequence

This is a very quick PDF that explains the way I have been able to weave a very basic Number Agency alongside my scope and sequence this year. This pack is a 'how to' in terms of setting up this type of problem solving in your class. Can stand alone from the scope and seqience. If you are using the scope and sequence I would recommend starting this once you have gotten through the first 40-50 or so sessions. My children have loved this approach, it has been fantastic for problem solving and

Phonological Activities For Everyday Classrooms

Created by
Number Agents
This is a PDF resource that links basic - early - advanced phonological understandings to very simple activities that you can use with your class. They are tried and true activities that I know have worked with my year 0-2 class and with individuals or small groups. No real resources required and can be used when you have five minutes to spare, or as a warm up in a literacy session. This is a crucial part of structured literacy.

Using Visual Tools To Develop Number Sense

This resource discusses how I use visual tools in agency to build number sense. I think developing visual strategies and knowledge is absolutely crucial if we are to build deep understanding about numbers. This resource reflects the knowledge I have developed over time about what works for my children. The tools and strategies discussed are simple and cheap to make or buy.

This is a follow on to my first set of cards to use with dot talks. The sets are slightly larger and include amounts in the teens. These dot talks have really transformed understandings in our agency and I love them.

More complex visual patterns - after the scope and sequence

Created by
Number Agents
This pack includes 23 images that are more complex and require children to be able to conceptually subitize...meaning combine known patterns quickly to compose the whole. They are intended to move children further into multiplicative thinking and to encourage concrete, pictorial/visual and abstract recording. This pack is for use after the scope and sequence, when children have good foundations in number sense. Included in the pack are instructions on how to use to guide practice in the class

This set of eight images have been designed to encourage agents to explore grouping strategies. They are not as abstract as the other images I have used and are designed to naturally lead to a discussion around grouping and doubles. These are most effective when used in a mixed ability group with a math talk approach.

Parts of a whole - mathematical discussion

The idea of this pack is for children to have one part of the indicated whole, they then need to apply understanding of the whole to work out what the missing parts may be. These are great for discussion, to apply reasoning and generate every possible solution. The colours of the dots could also be looked at to explore parts of the whole. This could be used as an activity within agency, or with a structured approach used prior to children being ready for agency. I use these for discussions in p

Missing Circles - Change Unknown

This pack works with a structured approach, but can also be used in agency. Ten amounts are represented, by two pages, one showing the whole amount, one with one part missing. This pack focuses in on change unknown. Children are given a whole amount represented by the numeral, but only shown part of the whole. They need to work out the hidden amount...the change unknown. There are ten slides in this pack, representing amounts from 4 up to 13. This can work in many ways, but works well as a numb

These patterns can be used for math talks, but also used in other ways to encourage children to develop counting skills. Young children often have difficultly counting items arranged in an irregular pattern and this is the aim of this resource. There are 15 images.

Dot Talks Three

This pack includes three dot talks that encourage children to look for parts within the whole to talk part in mathematical discussions. I use these with my structured approach and within Agency when I am running it. They are fantastic for embedding mathematical discussion about the whole and its parts and encouraging noticing.
