About the store
2012-2013 was my first year teaching. My "initiation" was teaching ESOL in the morning at one school, and EIP reading and math at another in the afternoon. I taught K, 1, 2, 4, and 5. It was a breeze! In actuality, it wasn't a breeze, but I enjoyed my first year tremendously and loved coming up with new ways for the students could interact, work independently, and feel a sense of pride in their learning.
Other details are that my previous career was landscape architecture and community planning. At the moment (while teaching full-time), I also maintain a successful photography business in Atlanta, GA - www.atwellphotography.com. I guess you could say that I like to stay busy.

Main Idea Chop Suey - Choose and Cite
This packet is a great packet to review main idea. Included in the packet are 8 sets of 4 sentences, one of which is the main idea. Once the main idea is found, have students cite evidence and defend why they chose the sentence as the main idea. To scaffold and aid students, also included is an anchor chart of evidence phrases as well as small cue cards. This set can be used by simply cutting the sentence strips.

Fruit Kabobs - A Recipe-tivity for Procedural Writing
Healthy food and a healthy, differentiated lesson for procedural writing. This will require some prep prior for the lesson, but students will get to make their own fruit kabobs while writing and reading a recipe! After writing a procedural final, students switch recipes with a classmate to see if their recipe is clear and thorough. Make this a one day or two day activity, but be sure to have students practice using sequencing words and correct plural forms of some yummy fruits.

Comics and Quotations
Help students visualize dialogue and practice writing with comics and quotations. Included in the packet are differentiated and leveled examples to model to students. There is also a mini poster to help students understand how to read the comic bubbles and use words other than said.
This is a great exercise after quotation marks have already been taught and students are ready to practice. If you use actual comics, it makes a colorful bulletin board.

Story Chop Suey - Reading Comprehension and ELA kinesthetic activity
Unscramble the sentences of a short story and choose the title and ending that fits best. What could be a plain ol' worksheet testing review or comprehension check can now be a kinesthetic activity for students with a touch of culture. How you choose to deliver this lesson is up to you, but I used chop sticks and the sentences from the story were the noodles.
Simply print pages on colors as directed and cut between sentences.

Teaching style
Thanks to my work with ELL students, I encourage interaction and a managed chatter in my classroom. I think that through center work and games that all students learn the content and meet the standards while engaged and having a great time. The bonus to this style is that they learn to manage themselves, leaders emerge, and I allow them to teach each other.

My own education history
After leaving my career as a landscape architect, I returned to graduate school at Mercer and got my Master in the Art of Teaching. I also got my ESOL Endorsement from the University of Georgia.
Additional biographical information
I come from a line of teachers, language teachers to be exact. My grandmother taught French in Vietnam, my mom and aunt were ESOL teachers' aides, and my cousin also teaches ESOL. I learned to speak Vietnamese when I was four, and I absolutely love to see ELL grow during the course of the year!
I've been married for two years, and our family is small, yet bursting with love between the husband and me and the little doggie. We hope to expand our family at any time.
