I have taught 8th and 7th grade ELA for the past 18 years. Currently in my middle school we have grade level teams, including inclusion classes. Many of the materials posted have been produced in conjunction with one of my SE co-teachers.
I also have experience with Differentiated Instruction. Seven years ago I was selected to be a part of our district-wide DI teacher team. We have presented throughout NYS as well as Washington D.C., and Baltimore.

Lifting Lines While Reading Independently
I used this mini lesson for students once they were a few chapters into their independent reading book. We took 2-3 days to kick this off, along with follow-ups where students could then share the lines that they have found. Lifting lines was something we did THROUGHOUT independent reading the entire school year.

How to do a BOOK TALK
I used this as a mini-lesson prior to doing book talks in small groups. This was meant to show what to do and what not to do and also provide students a chance to jot down their thoughts and ideas if they were unsure what information what to share. My 7th graders did book talks on novels that they had read independently. To reinforce listening skills, students who were in the group listening, kept a "want to check out" list in their writer's notebook.

This is a great getting to know you activity for the start of the school year. Students get to move around the room and get to know one another, as well as provide the teacher with information that show how they are unique.

Teaching style
In my ELA classroom I try to offer a variety of models and methods for my students to acquire knowledge, reading skills and modes of communication. I have to adjust my style constantly, breaking out of my own preferred learning style(s) so that I can meet the needs of all of my students. Many of my lessons involve mini-lessons and re-grouping in order to keep the middle-level learner engaged.

I am a mom; my son recently graduated from high school. I enjoy incorporating what strategies were effective for him as a student as much as I can in my own lessons.
