Experience

Teaching style

Hands-On Learning Philosophy Second graders are naturally curious and learn through their senses. My classroom is filled with opportunities for tactile, kinesthetic learning experiences: Math manipulatives help students visualize addition, subtraction, and place value concepts Science experiments allow students to observe, predict, and draw conclusions firsthand Interactive writing activities where students physically move letters and words to understand phonics and sentence structure Art integration that connects creativity with academic content across all subjects

Awards & shining teacher moments

Moments That Define My Teaching One of my most rewarding experiences happened during a small reading group when "Maria", who had been struggling with decoding, suddenly looked up with wide eyes and read a word she had struggled to decode. That moment of breakthrough—when all the hands-on practice with manipulating sounds and letters finally clicked—reminded me why I believe so deeply in giving students concrete tools to unlock abstract concepts.

My own education history

Educational Foundation and Professional Development My educational journey has uniquely prepared me to serve diverse learners through a student-centered, hands-on approach. With a Bachelor's degree in Spanish, I bring a deep understanding of language acquisition and cultural awareness to my classroom, recognizing how students learn to communicate and express themselves. This background has been invaluable in supporting English language learners and understanding the complexities of literacy development. My Master's degree in Science Education has equipped me with research-based strategies for making abstract concepts concrete through experiential learning. This advanced training reinforced my belief that students learn best when they can manipulate materials, conduct investigations, and draw their own conclusions. The combination of my language background and science education expertise allows me to create interdisciplinary experiences where students explore content through multiple modalities. Beyond my formal degrees, I am committed to ongoing professional development and training. I continuously seek out workshops, conferences, and collaborative learning opportunities that enhance my ability to meet each student's unique needs. This commitment to lifelong learning mirrors the curiosity and growth mindset I hope to instill in my second-grade students.

Additional biographical information

My commitment to service extends far beyond the classroom walls. As a six-gallon blood donor, I regularly contribute to my community's health and well-being, modeling for my students the importance of helping others and making a positive impact in our world. My passion for environmental conservation drives my volunteer work as a researcher with both the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Bolsa Chica Conservancy, where I document and monitor sea turtle populations. This hands-on field research not only fuels my own love of scientific inquiry but also brings authentic experiences into my classroom. When my students learn about marine ecosystems or animal adaptations, I can share real data, photographs, and stories from my conservation work, making abstract concepts tangible and meaningful. This volunteer research reinforces my belief in experiential learning—just as I learn about sea turtle behavior through direct observation and data collection in the field, my students learn best when they can explore, investigate, and discover through their own hands-on experiences. My conservation work serves as a living example of how curiosity leads to meaningful action and lifelong learning.
