Here is a list of the Journeys 2017 spelling words by unit for the year to send home. Just add the dates next to the lesson number so parents will always know what the spelling words are for the week. I added 4 high frequency words to lessons 1 to 15 to make 10 words. The extra words are in bold. I will let my students use the word wall for the 4 high frequency words. I am repeating the 4 extra words 2 weeks in a row to get them used to using the word wall for spelling those 4 wo

Keep track of either the Summer or Winter U. S. Olympic Medals count by filling in a circle for each medal earned on one of the 4 graphs I made. I have space for 30 of each medal on the Winter Olympic graph. I have space for 50 of each medal on the Summer Olympic graph. I used past Olympic medal totals as a guide to how many circles I made for medals. In the Summer Olympics 2016, the U. S. earned 46 gold medals, 37 medals silver, and 38 bronze medals. Copy wings and eye pattern on white paper. Copy body on tan construction paper. Copy the large circle (spy glass) on bright construction paper. Children then cut out the circles and ovals and glue them on the large circle to make Fly Guy. They can also draw Fly Guy using Youtube instructions and write their own original story about Fly Guy on the template for lined paper included. I displayed both the paper Fly Guys and my student's illustrated stories in the hall for everyone to see.

Your students will enjoy playing tic-tac-toe while they practice reading the high frequency words for the week with other students and their parents. There is a tic-tac-toe game to go with each of the 30 weekly 'Words to Know' list. You can use this worksheet to practice or review the words in class and then send it home for homework. Students and parents enjoy playing the tic-tac-toe game while practicing the words. When students return the signed worksheet you get feedback from the parent

At the beginning of the year I send home the Word-to Know list for units 1-3 in their Homework Help Folder and then units 4-6 at the beginning of the second semester. I also send home the Words-to-Know list at the end of each unit for the parents to review with their child before I test their child over those words. Some of my parents really appreciate having these word lists at home to review and even like to work ahead with their child.
