This is a quick, easy and meaningful why to teach punctuation marks to elementary students, or even older students as a fun review. You can use any punctuation related books to go along with it and make it even more fun I used "Punctuation Celebration by Elsa Knight Brunno. I had my students put their own copy in their Language Arts Interactive Notebook as a reference to use when they needed to remember when to use proper punctuation marks! Enjoy and have fun.

Hello, Hope you enjoy teaching this poetry unit as much as I did creating it. My students really enjoyed learning about poetry and writing their own. This unit includes 9 different types of poems. Each lesson teaches a kind of poem, tells what the poem is, and gives an example of it. There is a place on each page for students to create their own poem. I taught this unit at the beginning of the school year because it is a unit that allows for a great deal of student interaction giving students

This Reading Survey is a "Tic Tac Toe" graphic organizer. It has questions to give teachers (and students) a place to start to begin understanding how their students feel about their own reading. I use this in my class and complete one alone with the class. I use a blank one to also take a tally of the questions as we go over it together. Students are allowed to decide if they want to answer a question or not. This allows students to realize they are not alone in how they feel about reading an

Experience

Hi ! Thanks for visiting Pencil Points. I have been a teacher for over 30 years and I still love teaching. I am currently teaching 4th grade. I enjoy the energy and genuine enjoyment of learning of 9 and 10 year olds. In their eyes the world is a wonderful place with much exploring to do. I've taught every grade from K - 6th and find the older elementary grades to be the best fit.

Teaching style

My teaching style is a combination of structure and flexibility. I believe it is important to teach students to be responsible and independent within an educational environment that provides them the understanding they need to discover their own learning styles. Our school is an IB school system using and we fully implemtent the Primary Years Program totally integrating as much as the curricilumm we can. I follow the natural learning direction my students take and I'm able to teach concepts through whole group activities, group projects and hands on learning activities. I am always looking for my students to get that special "A-ha" moment when everything comes together.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I received an award from the Smithsonian Institute for excellence in science education.

My own education history

I have a Masters Degree in Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. I am trained in Reading Recovery and have a strong background in reading and writing. I have taken classes in Gifted and Talented Education, Content and Reading. I have always researched current educational trends and implemented the ones that allow children to learn openly and independently.

Additional biographical information

I have 2 wonderful children, both in college. We live with 2 miniature pinchers, and, a cat who bosses our dogs around. I am from Pittsburgh, and am a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I also enjoy the humor of Charles Schultz, the creator of the Peanuts Comics. I have a very large collection of all things Snoopy which is displayed in my classroom next to my Steelers collection. More important is I am a christian and put God before everything. I feel I am doing what he has called me to do. With him all things are possible. Looking forward to hearing any questions you may have. Enjoy!
