Personalized and Competency-Based ELA

Hi! I’m a high school English and Education Pathway teacher with over 20 years of experience in secondary education, special education, and dual credit instruction. I hold certifications in English/Language Arts (Grades 5–8), Special Education (K–12), and dual credit courses in both English and Education. I currently teach a range of English and education courses at Garrett High School and serve as Department Chair for English/Language Arts.

I believe in creating a student-centered classroom where learning is personalized, meaningful, and empowering. My approach is rooted in personalized learning—adapting instruction to meet each student’s unique strengths, needs, and interests. I incorporate competency-based learning, allowing students to progress at their own pace and demonstrate mastery in ways that make sense for them. I also prioritize student voice and choice, giving learners opportunities to take ownership of their education through flexible assignments, self-reflection, and real-world connections. My goal is to foster a classroom culture where students feel valued, capable, and motivated to grow—academically and personally.

I hold a Master of Science in Education with a focus on Mild Intervention and Serious Emotional Disabilities, along with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education, both from the University of Saint Francis. I’ve also completed extensive postgraduate coursework in English and Education through Indiana Wesleyan University and the University of Indianapolis, which has allowed me to teach dual credit courses in both disciplines.

My passion is creating engaging, inclusive resources that support real learning—for both students and teachers. Whether it’s literature, writing, career exploration, or teacher prep, I design materials that are practicalclassroom-tested. Thanks for stopping by!
