Activity - Dealing with Data on Excel

Created by
Physics Dave
This activity trains students to process data according to the IB DP Group 4 standards using Excel. These skills are critical for the Group 4 internal assessment. It is based on data from a physics experiment, but the skills learned are applicable to other IB DP Group 4 subjects including chemistry and biology. Students will learn how to properly format a data table, perform spreadsheet calculations including uncertainty calculations, and create a properly formatted graph which includes error ba

IB DP Group 4 Internal Assessment Investigation Planning Sheet

Created by
Physics Dave
This document helps students plan their IB DP Science IA investigation. Students create their research question and hypothesis, and plan out their methodology including the independent variable, the dependent variable, the control variables, materials and equipment. It is suitable for IB DP Physics, IB DP Chemistry, IB DP Biology, and IB DP Sports Science.

Physics Activity - Standing Waves in a Microwave Oven

Created by
Physics Dave
In this activity, students experimentally determine the positions of the nodes and antinodes when a standing wave forms in a microwave oven using a chocolate bar. From their results, students can actually calculate the speed of light with surprising accuracy.

Physics Activity - Graphing Simple Harmonic Motion

Created by
Physics Dave
This free document can be used as a companion handout with the “IB DP Physics Topic 4 Presentation - Waves”. It is a template for students to predict simple harmonic motion graphs for position, velocity, acceleration, force and energy. This activity can be combined with a demonstration of simple harmonic motion. Using a data logger with a force sensor and motion detector, the position, velocity, acceleration and force of a suspended mass oscillating on a vertical spring can be plotted.

Teaching style

Learning is a dynamic process where new knowledge must be built on connections already established in the brain. The teaching resources I have created are designed with questions and tasks meant to prompt student’s thinking and reflection on what they know, and to connect new ideas and understanding to their existing knowledge in logical steps. I use clear and engaging visuals to help illustrate ideas, and streamlined consistent formatting to avoid distraction from what is most important. I believe that to secure new knowledge, students must be given opportunities to apply the newly presented ideas and skills to novel scenarios and problems. These opportunities are built into the resources I have created.
