Have students research on of the periodic trends as a group and create a teaching aid (It is described as a poster here, but it could just as easily be a video or web page) and present their findings to the class.

Students need practice with putting things in scientific notation and interpreting numbers that are in scientific notation. This short practice is good for those who learned earlier but need a refresher.

Lab Equipment Video

Have you ever noticed that students call every piece of glass in the lab a beaker? That's because movies and TV shows with school labs do it too. Yet, each piece of lab equipment was designed with a purpose. It's important for students to know the names of equipment and what their purpose is so they can use them for the right tasks. This video could be used as a homework assignment for classroom flipping. Or it could be assigned to a student who was absent the day you taught the material in

When teaching about the atom, I find that I am frequently asked by students, “Well, if we’ve never seen one, how do we know if any of this is true?” This activity guides them through making non-visual observations and drawing conclusions based on those observations.

Physics Hawk
This is a fun activity for students to learn about the qualities of elements on the periodic table. They must pretend they are running for Element of the Year and make a campaign speech that includes of the elements positive attributes and how it is used in the world.

Research Essay - The Role of NASA

Created by
Physics Hawk
After teaching a unit on the Apollo era, I want students to think about NASA's current role in the world. They are required to choose three spending priorities and write a properly cited 5 paragraph essay. This was written for use in a Christian school, but the document is editable for you to adapt it for your needs.

Have you ever noticed that students call every piece of glass in the lab a beaker? That's because movies and TV shows with school labs do it too. Yet, each piece of lab equipment was designed with a purpose. It's important for students to know the names of equipment and what their purpose is so they can use them for the right tasks. This game allows you to engage in retrieval practice about the names and purposes of basic lab equipment.

Having students evaluate what NASA does and what they should do is a great way to teach research skills, argumentative writing, and include great scientific content. Plus, it involves all the highest levels of Bloom's taxonomy because they are synthesizing, evaluating, and creating. (This product differs from the other in providing a Biblical Worldview Integration section in the instructions as well as requiring them to write from a Biblical Worldview in the rubric.)

This may be the most useful tool I ever made for my students. It lays out all three bond types with the rules of formula writing and compound naming, examples, and any quirks they'll run across. A great "at a glance" help sheet to use as a scaffold.

Periodic Table Game Creation Project

The periodic table contains so much information that it lends itself well to a game. Having students create the game will require them to research what how that information is organized. If you students with artistic skills, they can shine in board design. Students are highly skilled in research can contribute their talent. Then, spend a day of retrieval practice by having groups trade games and play.

Additional biographical information

Teaching during the pandemic was hard. In fact, it was the hardest thing I've ever done. But, it did require me to digitize some things I hadn't before and to evaluate test questions as I moved them over to digital platforms, ultimately resulting in better questions. You can benefit from that work here.
