I use this project in my precalculus course as an alternative assessment. Students create art on graph paper using the many types of graphs they studied in precalculus, including trig, conic sections, and polar graphs. A detailed set of instructions and a rubric are included. I have my students grade themselves and turn in their rubric, so they know exactly how they are being evaluated. There are also "documentation" pages where they list each equation included in their art, and break down what
This is a foldable "cootie catcher" or "fortune teller" to increase student familiarity with graphs of polar coordinates in Precalculus. Also included are PDF pages for each section, so you can have students add in descriptive information about each kind of equation and graph, depending on the scope of your course. Folding Directions are available here: How to Make a Cootie Catcher (Origami Fortune Teller): 10 Steps (wikihow.com)
THIEVES is a study method that trains students in the skill of reading a non-fiction texts. This product was adapted from the readwritethink.org article Using THIEVES to Preview Nonfiction Texts. The major changes I made were to make it math-specific, as math texts have example problems, and I wanted my students to both read the problems, and work some in their notes. You will receive a PDF file of my THIEVES graphic organizer, suitable for printing or digital distribution. In my class, I assi
Students write a five line poem, with each line having the same number of syllables as a digit of pi. In my class, I have students write their names on the back, and then have a day long pi-ku contest.
This is a fun printable hat that students can cut out and wear to celebrate Pi Day. It comes with a pencil topper that doubles as a pi-ratey eye patch. Happy celebrating!
In this activity, each student verifies a trig identity. Then they cut up their steps, exchange with another student, and put their new puzzle back together. There are four identities, ranging in difficulty. This is a great way to scaffold verifying trig identities in Precalculus. I use it in conjunction with a Desmos sorting activity, which you are also welcome to use: https://teacher.desmos.com/activitybuilder/custom/65eb639ac39666e4905f95c8
