These are a couple of the book report assignments I have used in my classroom over the years with my 7th and 8th grade students. I like to give them assignments that show they have really read the book. I don't like to use the standard methods of book reports and this also keeps students from cheating and copying from others.
I read a book that discussed the 100 words every middle school student should know. this is a typed list of those words. I use it with my 8th graders and they have to learn 10 new ones each week for a quiz. It works really well for vocabulary!
This is a project I designed for my 7th grade students to work on. They had then entire nine weeks to work on it. Not only does it teach autobiography, because it is all about them, it also covers some state standards! They loved working on this assignment and I had some great posters!

This is a lesson plan that deals with Plot Elements, Author's Purpose, and Types of Plot. It includes different centers/stations for students to break into. this lesson plan can be used for 2-5 days of instruction depending on class size and instructional level. I use it with my 7th and 8th grade reading classes but you could easily modify it to go down or up a few grade levels.
This is an assignment where students are asked to create a poster with boards similar to those on the popular site Pinterest, They are to develop boards and glue them onto a poster for a large assignment. I use this as a test grade. This goes great with an autobiography unit of study. Students LOVE this assignment!!! Really great projects come from assigning this!
I use this in my classroom as a test grade project that the students work on all 9 weeks. I assign them each a "Who Was..." book about a different person. They work on this project independently as they finish with their daily work.

This is a test I use after we study the story of "Thank You M'am." It covers comprehension and vocabulary. I review all of the questions during our group discussion throughout the week prior to giving them this test.
This is a project I use for my 7th grade students to do some research on a particular author. I usually let them choose 3 of their favorite authors. Then, I look through their lists, and assign one of their choices to them.
These are a set of 5 questions for the 7th grade and 5 questions for the 8th grade that I assign to my students to complete over a nine week time period. I have found that they cover the higher order thinking skills as well as guaranteeing the student must read the book! You all know how you have some students that read the first chapter, a little in the middle, and the end chapter? This will not work to complete these questions! I use this as a end of the nine-weeks test grade! It wor
This is a fun activity to use when working on poetry or anytime. Students use words they find from magazines to help them do this activity. A class favorite!
This is a project I developed to showcase the creative fictional writing of my 8th grade students. I have also used this same project with as a book report tool by having them to put their book report in the DVD case and redesign the DVD case lie the book they read. Students love this assignment and they make great displays and conversation starters for students and parent teacher meetings.
