In this lab students will be determining the formula for the volume of a sphere in relation to the volume of a cylinder using play dough. I created it for my standard and honors 8th grade math classes to give them a sense of where the sphere's volume formula comes from. This works best in more advanced classes, but is accessible to any student with the right groupings and support. My students loved that they got to play with play dough for this one. It really got them engaged and having good co
I used this during the transformations unit in my standard 8th grade math class. I had students fill out rows as closures for class periods. It helped them to have a running list of all pertinent vocabulary with diagrams and/or examples.
This could also be used as a review activity at the end of the unit before a test.
