Practically Speeching

If you're looking for a concise way to explain all the tips and tricks you are using in your therapy sessions look no further! This is a two page, black and white handout that lists some (not all!) of the great ways to elicit /s/. This would be a great item to stick in a speech notebook or handout to parents during conferences.

Instead of my typical parent-letter, I decided to create this two page hand-out about what parents and children can expect from in-school speech. Included are things I do in my speech room, that I'm sure you do in yours as well! This hand-out talks about why a child is in speech, how to use a speech notebook, behavior management in speech, how to practice at home, and why we use technology in Speech. Use this packet to review an emotion each month or week, depending on how you are including this in your sessions. Laminate each emotion and attach the emotion pictures with velcro. Use dry-erase markers to fill in the statements. The statements target self-soothing strategies, and associate the appropriate action with an emotion. Use as a monthly activity or hole punch and use binder rings for a session activity.

This book was created for use during a push-in session for a nonverbal child with autism. It follows a typical morning meeting structure - day, month, year, weather, season. It's a great way to get your nonverbal kids involved with the class activity! Simply print the book, cut out the manipulatives, and use velcro to have an easy on/off pull.

Teach social language with this great game! Use the game board, or use the cards alone. Each player picks a card with every turn. Use a spinner with numbers to determine how far that player goes. After reading the social situation on the cards provided, determine if the situation was sour or sweet. Sort the cards into the appropriate candy jar. First one on the game board to get to the candy jar wins!

Have you heard of the extreme dare devil Felix Baumgartner? He's jumped off buildings, flown through the stratosphere! He's the ultimate extremist, but what makes him do these crazy stunts? I'm SURE he's persuaded somehow! Let your kids come up with a new mission for Felix and persuade him to do it! Watch videos on Felix, get his background, and then plan a mission! Build a Vocabulary Robot! Have students fill in all of the parts of the Robot to define the word! Cut it up and have them piece it back together, leave it together and have them decorate it after they fill it in! Use this to help define words focusing on category, attribute, illustrations, synonyms, and antonyms! Even room on the bottom of the sheet to form a sentence!

Go over these persuasive words with your students, then laminate the two slides with the hats. Hand out each vocabulary word at random and have your students use them within their letter to the host!
