About the store
As both a parent and an educator, I know the power of words to transform a child's self-esteem. While I am a professional writer and journalist by trade, I have also taught language, literacy, and writing skills to middle and high school students. My biggest passion has been helping my young child overcome a speech delay. Through social stories, scaffolding, and the wonderful cadence of words that makes stories more memorable, I help children with speech delays develop confidence to speak, self-advocate, connect -- and be heard.

Experience

As both a parent and an educator, I know the power of words to transform a child's self-esteem. While I am a professional writer and journalist by trade, I have also taught language, literacy, and writing skills to middle and high school students. My biggest passion has been helping my young child overcome a speech delay. Through social stories, scaffolding, and the wonderful cadence of words that makes stories more memorable, I help children with speech delays develop confidence to speak, self-advocate, connect -- and be heard.

Teaching style

When I write, my goal is not to tell a child what to feel. Instead, I begin with acknowledgment that a child's feelings are always legitimate. From that vantage point, I then help them cultivate self-awareness of how situations may make them feel, and just as importantly, then learn the tools and replacement strategies they can use when feelings arise in uncomfortable or new social situations.

My own education history

I hold a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University; and a dual bachelor's degree in English and Political Science from Virginia Commonwealth University, where I graduated magna cum laude.

Additional biographical information
