Teaching style

Science of Reading, Structured Literacy, Picture Embedded Literacy, and Phonics. I love play-based learning using games to help students practice and master skills for reading, spelling, and learning the spelling patterns of words. Reading intervention groups have allowed me to make tons of exciting games that kids love to play and it helps them master the skill of reading. Using scope and sequences that share elements from UFLI, Orton-Gillingham, and other great evidence-based programs.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have a huge stack of cards and letters from children, parents, and teachers that say "Thank you for teaching them." Over 15 years of teaching. I still love hearing, " I know, you taught me that when I was younger." I have just started making YouTube videos - Please check it out https://www.youtube.com/@PureJoyTeaching

My own education history

Started teaching preschool and then moved into reading intervention groups and English as a Second Language.

Additional biographical information

Educator, Author, and illustrator, You can find my books sold on Amazon. by D. Passmore Subscribe on YouTube Pure Joy Teaching The Pirate Handwriting Book is an easy-to-follow handwriting storybook that groups the lowercase letters by letter shapes as it tells a story of the pirates discovering the patterns that similar letters make. Following the Orton-Gillingham style of writing. The four-letter groups can help remove letter confusion and reversals. Weaved into the story is a focus on the vowel sounds, as the pirates discover that they can not read with the letters that they have learned to make. This book paired with my handwriting strips and mnemonic letters on my site, is a great program. Check out my YouTube videos for more handwriting and letter sound support.
