I firmly believe that it is my responsibility to improve the literacy skills of every student that enters my class, regardless of his/her ability level upon entering. I employ strategies that will allow all students to experience success in the 5 areas of literacy (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and, thinking). I scaffold instruction and make connections to society today so that every student is empowered to use these skills both in and out of the classroom. I am mindful that I am not only improving the skills of students in my classroom, but the skills of members of our community. Creating successful community members is my top priority!
In my classroom, I use thematic units to teach real-world literacy. In each unit, I want students to interact with multiple texts and work on developing all five areas of literacy: reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and listening. One area I have improved upon as an educator is in helping students make relevant connections to the texts so they are able to improve their individual literacy skills and gain a better understanding of the world around them. Regardless of the career path each student chooses, they will need to think critically and interpret information in a variety of forms. To help with this, I have student interpret a variety of texts and make connections to themselves, other texts, and the world. I have students show these connections in a variety of formats including short responses, illustrations, essays, graphic and organizers.
