Teaching style

I employ a flexible blend of instructional approaches to meet each lesson’s goals and my students’ needs, shifting seamlessly between styles to maximize engagement and understanding: 1. Direct Instruction When introducing new concepts—especially foundational skills in Algebra or Pre-Calculus—I guide students through clear, step-by-step explanations, modeling problem-solving strategies on the board. This “front-seat driving” ensures every learner sees the full process before practicing independently. 2. Cooperative Learning To deepen conceptual understanding and build communication skills, I organize students into small teams for targeted tasks: solving multistep problems, peer-reviewing proofs, or generating data sets for statistical analysis. Each group member has a role, promoting accountability and collaboration. 3. Hands-On/Exploratory Activities I design real-world projects—such as applying probability to game design or modeling population growth with spreadsheets—so learners “get their hands dirty” in authentic math tasks. This organic, inquiry-based approach encourages students to pose questions, test hypotheses, and draw conclusions themselves. 4. “Front-Seat Driving” with Gradual Release I balance teacher-led demonstration with scaffolded practice, moving from “I do” (teacher models) to “We do” (guided practice) to “You do” (independent or small-group work). By adjusting the support level throughout a lesson, I keep students in the optimal zone for challenge and confidence. 5. Organic, Responsive Teaching Although my classroom routines and expectations remain consistent—clear learning targets, routines for group work, and data-driven exit tickets—I adapt pacing and activities in real time. If a particular strategy isn’t resonating, I’ll pivot mid-lesson: shifting from lecture to a quick think-pair-share or vice versa, ensuring no learner is left behind. By weaving these styles together—direct teaching, collaborative problem solving, hands-on exploration, guided release, and organic responsiveness—I create a dynamic learning environment where every student can thrive.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Awards & Recognitions Winner, The Great Calculus Bowl (2003) – Demonstrated top-tier problem-solving skills and conceptual mastery among regional competitors in university-level calculus challenges. Recipient, Skinner Mathematics Scholarship (2007) – Honored for outstanding academic achievement and promise in both mathematics and secondary education during undergraduate studies. Awarded, Exceptional Leadership Award (2011) – Recognized by Vanguard Classical School for exemplary initiative in curriculum design, team collaboration, and mentorship across K–8 math instruction.

My own education history

Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, May 2007 Completed a rigorous dual-major program combining advanced mathematics coursework (Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Differential Equations) with professional education studies (Classroom Management, Curriculum Design, Educational Psychology). Served as a Calculus Teaching Assistant for three semesters—led recitation sessions for Calculus I–III, developed supplemental Maple software tutorials, and supported over 150 undergraduates in mastering foundational and multivariable calculus concepts. Teaching & Instructional Leadership With over 15 years of diverse instructional experience across grades 5–12, I have: Served as Network Math Lead, guiding 11th-grade teams across multiple campuses, developing Integrated Math 3 curriculum, and facilitating weekly professional learning communities to elevate teacher practice and student achievement. Functioned as Math Specialist for grades 5–8, implementing the Singapore Math framework, authoring gateway exams and differentiated summer packets, and leveraging MAP and TCAP data to drive targeted small-group instruction. Taught a comprehensive range of courses—including Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Honors Financial Literacy, Pre-Calculus, and AP Statistics—employing a dynamic blend of direct instruction, cooperative learning, and hands-on exploration to engage diverse learners. Worked as a private tutor for college-level students in Calculus I–III and Linear Algebra, crafting individualized lesson plans, hands-on software tutorials, and intensive exam review sessions that consistently improved student confidence and grades.

Additional biographical information

I’m Steph Maronick, a Wyoming native now living in West Palm Beach, Florida, where I teach high school mathematics at a private school. I hold dual Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Secondary Education from the University of Wyoming, and I’ve spent over fifteen years creating data-driven, student-centered lessons that blend clear instruction, collaborative problem solving, and real-world, project-based explorations. When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll find me kayaking along Florida’s waterways, chasing waterfalls on hiking adventures, or planning my next international trip—traveling is my favorite way to gain new perspectives and bring fresh ideas back to my teaching. I snowboarded in my college days but now trade the slopes for sun-soaked trails and river bends. I also volunteer regularly in my community and believe in the importance of giving back.
