Help children create a simple reflective journal throughout their unit. This prompt helps children (and teachers new to PYP) to become more familiar with the terminology of PYP and to formalise their thinking as they progress through the unit. Don't be afraid to spend time discussing and taking about these components of the unit rather than just focusing on the content of the unit. It is these elements that bring about discussion and deeper understanding of connections and learning.

Great for PYP classrooms and unit starters. Use artefacts, statements, pictures and have pupils walk around the room and note their observations. Use in groups or individually. Can be printed but designed for iPad use and platforms such as Showbie.

Give your children a range of sums both correct and incorrect and ask them to sort them. Great for getting them to solve sums without handing out a worksheet. Easy to check for misconceptions as they also have to explain their thinking. Easy to personalise for differing levels.
Help pupils unpick the stages of a maths problem and organise their thoughts. Easy for teachers to spot the stage where misconceptions appear and also help pupils reflect on their own areas to develop, Ideal for group or independent work.
Have pupils be independent and record their favourite books to share with each other. Model how to locate the key information, then have a recommended book area in the class with a feature book each week.
1st - 7th
Balanced Literacy, English Language Arts, Literature
Help children, especially second language learners unpick vocabulary and build understanding od words. Can be used to introduce new technical vocabulary for a topic or unit of study. I like to use this one as a jigsaw activity where different groups develop deeper understanding of different words and then share back. Display around the class for easy reference during the ongoing study.
With a huge increase in digital platforms and iPad use in class, this organiser helps children decide on the best way to present their learning. Giving children choice and ownership of sharing their learning is a powerful tool. This simple prompt helps children make an informed decision and gives them independence in doing so. Model different ways of presenting learning with your children and have this in their iPad resources as an ongoing reference.
