Have you had a curious student ask "Why does a sound like this?" or perhaps noticed with some frustration that a student who has a weakness in phonemic awareness wants to use the typical short a sound when it's not appropriate? How do you address this? Many teachers are exposed to the idea that we teach only 3 sounds for letter a: short a, long a, and the schwa. But when working with students it becomes apparent that this limits our ability to help with pronunciation issues. I hope that this ch

This file is perfect for introducing cause and effect to students in a concrete way. Students can use their background knowledge to help connect the cause to the correct effect, and use the sentence stems to state the cause and effect afterwards. This could be a great whole group, small group, or partner activity. It could be used in a writers workshop as well.

Experience

I have earned my Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist endorsement from George Fox University. Additionally I have taught first and second grade as well as serving as a temporary Academic Coach. Currently I own my tutoring business, Read PDX, serving students in person and virtually for intervention style sessions working one-on-one on literacy and elementary subject goals. Teaching style

I believe that creating a positive classroom community is essential before academics can be taught. If a student feels valued and loved than he/she will believe that they can learn anything and will put in the effort to do so. I subscribe loosely to the SOR group, although I do believe that students who are neurotypical can thrive with instruction without that structure.

My own education history

I graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with my BA in elementary education. I then graduated with my Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist endorsement from George Fox University.

Additional biographical information

I enjoy kayaking, reading, hiking, traveling, and creating.
