In this unit, we use an extended metaphor to grow leaves as writers. This unit slideshow can be broken down into different days, shared with students independently, or reviewed as a whole. The information in this slideshow will provide students the opportunity to learn about screenwriting so that they can become screenwriters. This unit is best delivered after the students are familiar with short story writing.

Classroom Workflow and Waiting Room Tents

A custom design for my classroom workflow. I teach high school and my students have been extremely receptive to the waiting room (I cut them out on thick cardstock) and my workflow signs. I printed the workflow sign and posted it in multiple places around the room. This has been a game-changer for managing one-on-one conferencing during classtime and building independence for my most reluctant students.

This can work for 7-12th grade ELA classes so that students can track and compare topics across multiple texts. I print a copy for each student each day that we read. They keep a folder filled with their notes for each chapter or scene that we read. If they have anassigned reading for homework that night, they can add their notes to the appropriate note page. It helps for keeping track of details across longer texts, or if you are using multiple smaller texts as supplemental reading.

Students can partner-read or read independently to practice understanding figurative language and the more complex language of Elizabethan English in ACT II, Scene ii of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. My students found this to be so fun, accessible, and really helped them break down the complex language of Shakespeare's iambic pentameter/Early Modern English. This is great for empowering learners to access the text in a manageable way and doubles as a great sub plan so that students do

I use this lesson in small groups, as a whole group, or through individual work to introduce my reporters to the idea that there are SO many questions we should be asking about everything we experience. You can use any video clip for them to investigate but I enjoy using this one because it has a lot to inspect immediately.

An opportunity to study the news and the way that news is presented. This is a great opportunity for students of journalism AND English Language Arts or History classes to begin to look at the way that information is presented. This can help students BEGIN the study of evidence, bias, voice, and how an author chooses to present information.
