Want to start the year off creating a great classroom culture? Or even end the school year seeing what your students have learned about you? If your answer is yes, this is the game for you! We've all heard kids say that they think their teachers live at school. Sometimes I think we believe them as much as we're there! Truth is, however, we have lives outside of school and the more your students realize that about you, the better relationships you will have with your students. This is why the fi

This versatile, no-prep activity is so much fun! Use it as a brain-break, a friendly class competition, a quirky quiz and more! Show it as an example for students to create their own Powerpoint after playing this one. It really encourages them to think deeply about their favorite stories, listing the characters, themes, important words, settings, etc. Also great for end of the year fun! Wordle.net was used to create the scrambled art on each slide. If you’re a nearpod user, this Powerpoint easi

This free Powerpoint presentation was created to use on the day of the Book-a-Palooza Book Fair & Festival. We run it on the big screen for viewing alongside the art projects. It is just one more feature we use in addition to the lighting and music, creating a layered gallery experience. Visiting teachers like it because it occupies the students' attention if they finish the gallery earlier than the rest of their classmates. It is meant to accompany our 28 page Book-a-Palooza Book Fair Festiva

Experience

Together our experience covers over thirty years in Middle School. General education, special education/dropout prevention and reading. Currently co-teaching remedial reading in grades 6-8, also serving as Team Leaders, committee chairs, and grant writers.

Teaching style

Our style is rather unconventional. We use a balanced literacy model of centers and rotations, motivate our students with fieldtrips, reading on beanbag chairs, and once a year they get to throw water balloons at us! It is challenging to keep kids interested in reading, given all the distractions and options and gadgets and testing in their lives! Getting kids to try a book and realize it was "pretty good stuff" is a fabulous outcome of this job! Having them come back for more? Priceless!

Additional biographical information

Our goal for Reading Rox is to develop high quality materials for teachers needing something a little "different". Our students need a little extra motivation, worksheets and lessons with visual appeal. We are always on the lookout for fresh material that will hook our students’ attention. So much of what we find out there is so gosh darned cute, but not to our students! Ladybugs and polka dots don't cut it! Soooo….we’re creating a line of reading materials and teaching supplies that are edgy and modern and might just be what your students need to keep going.
