Experience

For nine years I have taught high school and collegiate level as a music appreciation, musical theatre, music theory, and choral music educator. I have taught English Language Arts at the 9-12th grade levels, and currently teach AP Literature and AP Seminar. I served as the professional community lead for my music department within my high school, and for the choral music at the district level. I currently serve as the Quality Matters coordinator for online learning and develop fine arts curriculum for the classroom and for online settings.

Teaching style

I love to make music education fun and well-rounded! I believe students should be reading and writing about music long before college, and I create curriculum for students that works as a supplementary lesson within ensemble classes that requires no prep work for teachers, but allows students to explore music while hitting National Core Arts Standards, and gives opportunities to explore music genres outside of their ensemble disciplines. I also know that music and English Language Arts go hand in hand, and many of my lessons are cross-curricular promoting literacy and language skills through the medium of music.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My ensembles have consistently been the top scorers in district, regional, and state festivals. We were named the New Mexico Honor Choir in 2021. We regularly receive honors at Solo & Ensemble. My musical theatres have won Best Ensemble for the NM Enchantment awards two years in a row, and individual students have been nominated or won awards within this organization as well. I was the Southwest Nominee for Emerging Teacher of the Year in 2021, the Southwest Nominee for Music Educator of the Year in 2022, and I was a finalist for LCPS Teacher of the Year in 2022.

My own education history

I have a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting. I am a Quality Matters certified instructor, and the Quality Matters Coordinator for my district, a title that focuses on creating and delivering the highest quality classes for fully online learning.

Additional biographical information

I am the conductor of a Denver-based treble ensemble called Safonia, and I direct musical theatre in Denver as well. I actively serve in the New Mexico Music Educators Association and the New Mexico American Choral Directors Association.
