This mini-unit teaches students how to get started with CAD using Onshape. Onshape is a free, browser-based CAD software that is a great alternative to Autodesk or Tinkercad. It offers the professional, parametric approach to CAD that Autodesk offers while allowing students to create 3D models from any device (Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, smart phone) connected to the internet. This introductory section is great for absolute beginners to CAD as well as those who have used other software in the past.

The projects require at least 1 LEGO Mindstorm kit or equivalent per group. It helps if the students have access to Onshape CAD software, which allows them to look at the mechanisms in real time before they build them. This project set is great for students who already have some experience working with LEGOs or similar products, but it can work for begi

About the store

Experience

I began my professional career as a Design Engineer in the plastics industry. I then transitioned into education where I have taught Engineering, Robotics, Wood Technology, and Computer Science.

Teaching style

I believe in a hands-on, practical approach to teaching. I do not assign fluff work and very rarely rely on worksheets or textbooks. My classes are centered around teaching students the skills and critical thinking that professional Engineers use everyday.

My own education history

Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering Master's of Arts in Instructional Technology
