Respiratory System Model Lab: Balloon Lung & Diaphragm Activity | NGSS MS-LS1

Help students see how breathing works with this hands-on respiratory system model lab! In this engaging middle school science activity, students build a balloon-in-a-bottle lung model to investigate how the diaphragm controls airflow through changes in volume and pressure. This lab is designed to directly address common misconceptions like “lungs suck air in” and “the diaphragm pulls on the lungs” while reinforcing structure and function and cause-and-effect reasoning aligned to NGSS. What St

Experience

I am a high school biology teacher who creates classroom-tested resources designed to make complex life science concepts engaging and accessible. I currently teach high school biology and design lessons aligned to NGSS standards, focusing on topics like genetics, cell biology, ecology, and evolution. Many of the resources in this store began as activities for my own students. I refine them each year based on real classroom feedback to ensure they are clear, effective, and genuinely engaging for students.

Teaching style

Since most of my teaching career has been in alternative education and/or special education classrooms, my teaching style focuses on active learning, inquiry, and problem-solving to increase engagement for the most reluctant learners. I believe students understand biology best when they interact with the concepts rather than simply memorizing vocabulary. That’s why many of my resources include puzzle-style review activities, escape rooms and challenge games, scaffolded notes and guided practice, NGSS-aligned questions, and real-world connections My goal is to help teachers save time while giving students meaningful learning experiences.
