This is a resource is a supplement to the book Perfect by Max Amato. In this book, a persnickety eraser and a fun-loving pencil have two different ideas of what It means to be perfect. I love this story for teaching students that it's ok to not always be perfect and that sometimes our best ideas come when we give ourselves that permission. This lesson begins with a read-aloud of the book. I like to give students some time for independent reflection as they answer the questions. I then follow

Experience

I am a sixth-year teacher who has taught fourth, fifth, and a 4/5 split. I am now in my third year of teaching Gifted and Talented students. As a GT Facilitator, I work with students from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Teaching style

I believe in hands-on, engaging lessons that are designed to really capture students' interests. I only have 30 minutes when I work with my K-2 students, so I really try and make every second count by using unique and exciting activities. My third through fifth-grade students spend 150 minutes with me per week. My class could best be described as a student-led environment. I plan the lessons, but where the lesson takes us is really up to each individual class.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My own education history

I received a B.A. in Print Journalism and Graphic Design at the University of Arkansas. After working as a graphic designer for a couple of years, I chose to stay home with my babies. Once my oldest began school, I found myself constantly volunteering in the classroom. This drove me to recognize my love for teaching (I was right when I was seven and wanted to be a teacher!) I then began working on a Masters of Arts in Teaching through Harding University. During this time period, I lucked into a long-term sub position as a Gifted and Talented Facilitator. Although I loved my years in a general education classroom, I knew that I wanted to eventually return to a GT classroom. I worked through Harding University to complete an additional certification in Gifted and Talented. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it. I'm now working in my dream job as a GT Facilitator for K-5.
