Tessellations

My 5th graders created wonderful Tessellations. They also learned a bit about geometry in the process (wow, teaching math the fun way!) I created this PowerPoint to introduce them to MC Escher and the concept of tessellations. I taught them how to make their 'template' or 'pattern' then turned them loose. This lesson was built on the lessons they learned in 4th grade when we did the Isometric Perspective and the Tiling lessons (also sold through this site).

My 6th graders did this project. It took about 8 weeks (1x week) to finish this. I've included in the word document: unit plan (overview), copy of letter home, grading rubric, detailed lesson plans, etc.

Tilings

My 4th graders learned a bit of geometry by creating a tiling. We used construction paper glued to paper. What they had to do was create a geometric shape that could be repeated in a pleasing pattern. This lesson followed a lesson on positive/negative shapes. We went onto Isometric Perspective after this (also on this site).

This is a lesson I did both with my 4th and 5th graders - with the 4th graders, it was a lesson that followed Tilings (also at this site) and with the 5th graders, it was a review and prior to teaching them how to draw in 3-D. After this presentation, they created their own Isometric Perspective designs. I can't seem to find my pictures of my student's work at this time, but when I do, I will edit this site and add them

My kindergarteners were introduced to geometry through learning about Piet Mondrian. They then produced their own versions, which turned out wonderful!
