I taught as a classroom teacher in grades K,1, and 2 for 14 years. I am now in my 7th year as a Science Cluster Teacher...which I LOVE! I use my past classroom experiences to help inspire and impact my new role as a "specials" teacher.
I designed this science practice test/review to be given at the end of the Unit 2 (Grade 3). Key vocabulary and concepts are addressed in this review. It really helped my students prepare for the Amplify Science Unit Assessment/Exam, and parents were able to review with the students at home using this review, too. You can also choose to give it as homework/test review or use it as a quiz/test instead of doing it as a review in class. I also included the Answer Key. (25 questions total- true/fa
This is a 20 multiple-choice question test based on the Amplify Science curriculum, Unit 1 "Balanced Forces" for Grade 3. The test includes pictures/diagrams for some questions to help support ENL students and visual learners. The answer key is included.
I created this test so it can be given after teaching the lessons in Unit 1: Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the Amplify Science 3rd grade curriculum. The test is 15 multiple-choice questions, some of which include picture support such as 2 ring magnets attracting and repelling. Since the Balanced Forces unit and most Amplify units are long (22 lessons), I created this test to assess progress after teaching the last lesson in chapter 2 and to check for understanding of the science vocabulary of th
This 3rd grade quiz/test has 15 multiple-choice questions. It can be used to assess students understanding at the end of the unit on Life Cycles and Traits. Topics/Vocab included in the quiz: organisms, life cycle, trait, reproduce, offspring, metamorphosis, butterfly life cycle, species, similarities and differences, mammals, amphibians, inherited and non-inherited traits, behavioral traits/instinct.
I'm a cluster/specials teacher with a cart, and my 2nd and 3rd grade students used this rubric to group/team and self-assess usually at the end of the period. I placed the rubric inside clear 10 x 8" frames (amazon sells a pack of 12!) to have on top of each table/group. It worked well for passing out and collecting quickly, and there also was no misplacement. Dry-erase markers could also be used to have students circle on the frames (or sheet-protectors) to self-assess. Please leave a comment/
My students had tons of fun (and so did the parents) for our first annual STEM Discovery Day as teams planned, designed, and tested to build the strongest paper bridge. The winning team's bridge held the most pennies. This file includes the slides in PDF format that I used with the students, the lesson plan, and an activity worksheet. The lesson has the NGSS standard, teaching point, materials needed, lesson steps, and share. This was a 2-day lesson...we invited parents to come on the 2nd day.
This file includes the pdf of slides I used with my 2nd grade students and visiting parents for our first annual STEM Discovery Day. It was a hit and no one wanted it to end! The slides included: a welcome to parents, definition of "STEM", tower examples, step-by-step directions for students with visuals for each step, a digital timer for the class, a data table to enter results, and the activity worksheet for you to make copies. The teaching point I used for this lesson is: Students will work
This is a great way to begin the year in science! Students will enjoy trying to build a pyramid, while learning that teamwork is most effective to success. Students will learn to talk about their ideas in groups, make a plan, test out their ideas, reconsider what might work best, reflect, and more. This is a great "team building" hands-on activity. You will need to provide the red solo cups, rubber bands, straws, and string. The slides have photos for you and your students that show examples of
One sheet for each chapter to quickly collect data for your whole class (3rd grade) for each lesson in Chapter 1 and 2 of "Unit 2: Inheritance and Traits". Rate their understanding with a 1-4 as you informally observe, do group work, share, etc. As a cluster teacher (Special) that taught 16 classes last year (over 400 students), this spreadsheet helped me keep track of my students learning and their grading. I wish I had come up with the idea while in Unit 1. Thank you! (I hope to add more chec
Notebook slides include the steps of the Scientific Method with visuals, Sink and float experiment with 6 steps including needed materials (large clear container, water, 2 seltzer cans), and a 3 step procedural writing model with photographs that I took of the experiment for the teaching point below. I did this particular lesson with a self-contained class of 12 students with IEP's but it can be altered to include more steps and explanation. The hands-on and visual components of the lesson helpe
This is a great end of the school year worksheet to have students reflect on their own science learning, and a good way to self-reflect as a teacher, too. I use these to help plan ahead and alter/improve my lessons. It's a nice way to end the year in science class!

Experience
I taught as a classroom teacher in grades K,1, and 2 for 14 years. I am now in my 7th year as a Science Cluster Teacher...which I LOVE! I use my past classroom experiences to help inspire and impact my new role as a "specials" teacher.
Teaching style
I have a student-centered, discovery approach to teaching science. I do a lot of coaching into small groups, and facilitate more than dictate.
My own education history
- Undergraduate degree in elementary education from C.W. Post Campus of LIU
-Master's degree in elementary education with a focus on children's literature from Queens College
