This activity teaches the students to use a real-world activity to apply each type of geometry transformation. They will have a great time "transforming" their house plans to satisfy the homeowners.
This graphing activity includes over 100 points that students will need to graph on a four quadrant grid. After the graphing is complete, I have the students add a message. Then, they have to name the points necessary to create the message. The students then trade papers to reveal each other's messages.
Students will find out the real meaning behind a formula as they adjust the measurements of a can to change it's volume and surface area. They will have a blast trying to find the most economical can that a company can use for it's product.
I like to read the children's book, The Three Little Pigs, the Wolf's Side of the Story, to my class before we graph this picture. The story can be found on the internet, but you may want to by the book instead. Then, you may show the class the pictures. All ages enjoy this book.
This lesson also includes raising the power of a power examples as well and multiplying and dividing. It even includes a silly song to help the students memorize the rules.
This puzzle is great to use in math centers. It can review both changing mixed numbers to improper fractions or vise verse. It will be a fun way for you students to review a basic skill.
