I have been a teacher for 5 years. My first year, I was a 5th grade teacher for students in a French immersion program that receive 70% of their instruction in English. The following year, I taught in a 4th grade co-taught class, where I was paired with a FABulous special education teacher and we worked to meet the needs of the wide range of learners and personalities in our class. The following 3 years, I remained in the co-taught setting with the same special education teacher, but in 5th grade. Through my work with her and my students, I have learned a tremendous amount about differentiating instruction, patience, creativity, and thoughtful planning and assessment.

Test Corrections/Error Analysis
I believe it is important for students to reflect on their work and to learn from their mistakes. So many times, I have had students who fly through assessments because they 1) feel confident and don't need to work carefully, or 2) just aren't really focused on their work. This error analysis has been a powerful way for students to review their work on unit tests after they have been corrected, to find their mistakes, and to explain those mistakes clearly. Experience

Teaching style
5th graders are on the verge of being able to think critically about the world around them. One of my main goals as a teacher is to help them begin the process of thinking critically through questioning and analyzing, while simultaneously teaching them the skills that will be essential to them as they move forward in their lives (i.e. reading for comprehension, multiplication, etc.). To ensure active participation, I like to have fun with them and enjoy each of their personalities, but I am also firm when necessary. Ultimately, I hope to help them become better students and positively contributing members of society, and to help them enjoy the journey of learning.

This year, I received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award for my district. Amazing and humbling.
My own education history
I grew up in Vermont, and went to Gettysburg College as an undergrad where I majored in Philosophy. After graduating, I worked in development at WGBH Educational Foundation in Boston for 4 years. I then decided to go back to school for teaching, and received my MAT from Tufts University. I found my current teaching position the day before school started (yikes!) and have been there ever since.
