This assignment requires students to write a persuasive paragraph based on the short story "Once Upon a Time" by Nadine Gordimer, but it could be modified for any short story. It includes the assignment description page, an evaluation page and an outline for the students to complete.
This activity defines two important reading strategies (skimming and scanning) and allows students to practice these skills using the novel, Divergent, by Veronica Roth. I used it as a group challenge. The answers to each question are included in parentheses for you.

These two pages feature five quotations from the play, Romeo and Juliet. Students have to identify the speaker of the quotation/to whom the quotation is spoken, the context of the scene and the literary significance of the quotation. I use these practice pages as a review before their unit test or before the final exam to practice quotation analysis.
