About the store
Scale Free Network (SFN) began as a collaboration between visual artist (Briony Barr), art teacher (Jacqueline Smith) and microbial ecologist (Dr Gregory Crocetti). Based in Melbourne, Australia, SFN now has a nine year track record of dreaming up workshops, exhibitions and interactive installations for children and adults, combining both artistic and scientific themes. Focused on the microscopic world as a source of inspiration and wonder, SFN projects visualise, explore and educate about this invisible realm. Using interactive microscopes, projections from the microworld, hands-on sculpture and drawing techniques – and now books – SFN asks the viewer-participant to look and think beyond the human scale from which we are so accustomed to seeing.

Teaching style

We believe humans learn best through creative stories. That's why we have created Small Friends Books series to tell positive stories about bacteria, fungi, viruses... and more. Because without them, we couldn't survive.

Awards & shining teacher moments

The Squid, the Vibrio & the Moon is winner of a Bronze medal in the Children’s eBook category in 2015 US Independent Publisher (IPPY) awards. Zobi and the Zoox is winner of a Puggle (children's choice award), and shortlisted for the 2015 Environmental Award for Children's Literature, the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year award and a 2015 DeBary Outstanding Children's Science Book Award. The Invisible War is winner of the 2017 Australian Book Design award for Best Educational Primary/Secondary Book.

Additional biographical information

Gregory Crocetti has a decade of experience as a scientific researcher and another decade of experience in science education. Briony Barr has a decade of experience working as a practising artist and a decade of experience working in arts education.
